JORN Mid Life Upgrade

The project will improve the performance of JORN and involves the replacement of most of the radar and frequency management system hardware, information and communication technology hardware. A new open software architecture and modern user interface will be implemented to provide flexibility and enable efficient future enhancement.

The project includes an Estate and Infrastructure Group (E&IG) managed infrastructure component, which sees upgrade of the facilities at the JORN Radar 3 sites near Alice Springs, which provide new Fly-In-Fly-Out accommodation and expand the ionosphere sounder network.

The AIR2025-6 prime acquisition contract, and the ongoing JORN sustainment contract were awarded to BAE Systems Australia. The radar network is used by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) for surveillance of modern aircraft and surface vessels.
